Easter hats, or more traditionally the Easter bonnet, are a tried and true part of Easter celebrations at primary schools around Australia.
The Easter hat parade is a school tradition that seems to have its roots in the northern hemisphere, where Americans and Europeans would wear hats to events like Easter Parade and church services.
Years ago, the tradition of wearing an elaborate Easter bonnet came about as people bought new clothes to celebrate the end of Lent (the 40 days of fasting and prayer for Christians that begins on Ash Wednesday). The first social occasion after this sombre period would be a trip to church on Easter Sunday morning. This was the perfect opportunity to show off a new outfit and matching bonnet that would be laden with bows, flowers and trimmings to herald the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
