Built Environments

This term we are learning about Built Environments, specifically buildings, bridges and roads. We started our topic  investigating homes –  our homes – what they are made of, what they have inside as well as looking at different homes and houses around the world and through history. We watched this short video from The Kid Should See This (a fantastic site with lots of interesting and educational videos)….

We carried out a bridge experiment  (similar to this one at  Questacon)  and we discovered that corrugated paper is quite strong because of the triangle shape.  We found out that triangles are very stable and a very important shape for building and engineering.

Isabella and Josh made this video about the experiment  with an Ipad using a free app called Shadow Puppets.

We watched another interesting video of a high rise building being constructed in China and we noticed all the triangles being used. (Also from The Kid should see this).

In Maths, Year One students made houses using base 10 math equipment.  They chose 3 didgit numbers and made a house of that value.  They then made poster houses of their favourite numbers ( ie: a flat = 100, a long = 10 and the little cube = 1).

A few straw homes were also constructed….

All in all a great start to term 4.  Looks like it is going to be another fun and busy term at Crossmaglen Public School!
